Why Not (x) ?

This page lists my (lucas) personal opinions on why i do not want to use existing full-featured solutions.

Following is a super short summary of some popular options - if discussions arise, i'm happy to create more extensive pages for certain projects.

Matrix Protocol solutions: Complex, Heavy on resources, none of the server implementations meet my requirements. For-Profit company Element seems quite centrally involved too
Revolt: very promising but recent sudden rebranding with poor communication didn't look great, also seems high in complexity
Mattermost: too corporate
Zulip: promising but Thread-focused discussions, different from the "server" model i'm going for
Rocket.chat: extremely corporate, upsells, licensing shenanigans (such as super low user limits for self-hosted instances when licensed)

Alternative: something like some XMPP solution for chat, with mumble or jitsi or something for realtime - but i REALLY want to combine chat + realtime into one frontend.

This list may be expanded, feel free to suggest alternatives and i'll check them out.
